Chapter 17

Rhys

It’s always harder to go back to the office after a Monday holiday, but today is especially hard.

“Want to get a little work in before we head into the office?” I ask, sliding a cup of coffee towards Cambria. I take a sip of my own, but to be honest, I don’t really need it. I just had the best sleep of my life. Waking up next to Cambria was different this morning. Our mornings in the hotels have always been hectic, but there’s something so amazingly normal about seeing her in my old kitchen, wearing one of my old sweaters and jogging pants.

“That sounds like a good idea. We didn’t exactly get a lot of work done yesterday, did we?” She smiles at me knowingly. No, we certainly did not get any work done.

“Hey, I’d still say our day off was a productive one. In a way.”

She twists her smile to the side of her mouth, and I kiss her from the other side of the kitchen island.

“I kinda wish we didn’t have to go in today at all, but I think you’re right. It’s hard to get any work done with you walking around half-naked like that.”

I step back, and raise my hands. “Hey, I can put on a shirt if you want. I can go upstairs right now and-”

“No, don’t! I didn’t mean it!” She whines playfully, coming around to my side and nuzzling into my arms with a laugh. I tickle her a little, but it’s not long before we’re kissing again. I just can’t not kiss her.

The sound of the front door opening tears us apart.

“Who’s that? I thought your parents were out of town-”

“They were. They are. Hello?” I call out. I can already tell from the sound of the footsteps coming down the hallway that it’s my Dad, with my Mom’s lighter steps following him, her rolling suitcase humming on the tile floor.

“Rhys? Is that you?”

Quickly, I step away from Cambria and try to look for a shirt to put on, but there’s nothing around, and no time. I’ve got to think fast.

“Well, this is less than ideal. They weren’t supposed to get home until tomorrow. You’d better take off that ring.” I say to Cambria, but it’s more of a command. She blinks twice before nodding, and handing me the ring from her finger.

How the hell did this happen? My parents are about to walk into their kitchen to find me, shirtless, serving breakfast to a girl wearing my sweater. It could not be more obvious what we’ve been up to for the last day and a half, but I have to do everything I can to distract them. I find a shirt on the back of a chair and slide it on just in time.

“Look who’s home early! Hey, Mom, Dad, you remember Cambria, right? Brie’s younger sister? We both work at Excellerate.” I say with more chill to my tone than I actually feel. My confused, exhausting-looking parents stand in the doorway.
